Fall is officially here to stay. The days are getting shorter, and the nights are turning colder. While fall is my favorite season, the variable weather this time of year makes getting dressed in the morning extremely challenging. If I try to dress for the coldest part of the day (morning), I am usually too hot by lunchtime and feel silly walking around campus in a heavy sweater/coat. If I try to dress for the warmest part of the day (mid-afternoon), I end up shivering at my desk in the morning while bitterly complaining about how cold my hands and feet are. After being caught out by the changing temperature a few too many times, I finally developed a system for layering that keeps me thermally comfortable throughout the day without sacrificing on style. I begin with a simple tee, add a thin sweater and/or long-sleeve button-down, throw on a puffer vest for some extra warmth, and finally top with a light jacket. This way I feel nice and toasty in the morning, and cool and comfortable in the afternoon.

What kind of fall weather are you having? How do you dress for big swings in temperature over the course of a day?

  1. Love your outfit...very cute! Looks like you do have your layering system down to a science. :)

Our temps don't change drastically over the day, but I do still layer in order to stay warm. I'm sure I'll be adding more layers as the weather continues to get colder, too.

    Have a lovely week!

  2. Cute outfit and nice color combination! The flannel shirt goes well with the herringbone vest. For some reasons, that vest goes with red color really well, I don't know the magic but they just looks very pleasant! I kind of regret not getting the factory herringbone vest when it just came out this season. Now it is excluded from all promotion and it is back ordered to December! I don't know I should order or not ... by the time I get my hands on it, it is freezing cold in the Mid-west!

Hope you have a nice week~

    1. Thanks, Elaine! About the herringbone vest, it's actually pretty boxy on me when I'm only wearing a button-down (hard to see in the pictures), and I think you're roughly my size, right? If you plan on wearing it over thick sweaters but under your coat during the winter, then my advice is to go ahead and get it. If you want to wear it as actual outerwear, you're probably better off passing since it'll be too cold by December!

    2. Thanks for your suggestion! I think this vest is a pass for me right now. I had the pinstripe excursion vest from this season which serves my purpose well. Now I'm looking forward to the holiday roll out so better save my bucks for that :-)
