Happy Thanksgiving (and Thanksgiving Sales)

Happy Thanksgiving, America! I am back from my European vacation just in time for the holidays. Perfect planning, I know. My trip to Amsterdam and Bruges was amazing! Unfortunately, I got sick while I was there, and I am still recovering. Since we don't have any special plans for Turkey Day, I'm going to just veg out for the rest of the week. When I feel better, I'll put together a post about what we saw/did/ate!

Obviously, Thanksgiving is synonymous with eating too much food and shopping Black Friday sales, but it's also a reminder to count our blessings. I want to take a moment to talk about what I feel grateful for this year. These are things I normally take for granted, but not everyone is as fortunate, so I should appreciate what I have. First of all, I am grateful that I am in generally good health, as are J and my parents. One benefit of being sick is that it always reminds me of how important good health actually is. With all of the wildfires that have happened, I feel grateful that I have a roof over my head this Thanksgiving. Not everyone is as lucky. I appreciate that I have had the opportunity to pursue a PhD, which is a luxury not everyone can afford. Also, I feel enormously grateful for the progress I have made with my mental health. I honestly can't imagine taking the trip we just came back from a few years ago at the peak of my anxiety. Last but certainly not least, I am grateful for J, my friends, and my family.

I bought the zip-top mini transport crossbody a while back, and I really like it. It was the only bag I brought on my Europe trip, because it's pretty lightweight and surprisingly spacious. NORDSTROM // New markdowns now through 11/26/2018. If it's more convenient for you, you can buy Madewell items through Nordstrom. They will price match as long as the same color/size is in stock. I love Nordstrom's return policy, so I buy through them whenever possible. I ordered this pearl-embellished tee, these glitter loafers (what can I say, I'm attracted to shiny things), and this faux shearling coat. I actually saw a ton of chic women in Europe wearing similar coats, and it makes me want one too.

NORDSTROM RACK // Extra 30% off clearance items and free shipping sitewide through 11/26/2018. I've been shopping at Nordstrom Rack a lot, because I frequently find really awesome deals. I prefer shopping in store for the best selection, but I realize your mileage may vary depending on your local store's selection. My favorite things to buy here are jeans, bags, shoes, and bras.

My Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks + Book Recommendations

July has been a crazy month for sales. First, there were summer clearance sales and Amazon Prime Day. Now the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has opened up to the public. I am mostly sitting this one out, because I already overspent this month.  However, I still want to highlight a few gems that I think are actually a good value for those of you who are shopping. (Keep in mind that some items may be made specifically for the sale. For more info, check out Xin's post. As far as I can tell, my recommendations seem to be retail items.) My sale picks include these classic stud earrings (I bought mine a few years ago and wear them constantly), these high-waisted leggings (I own 3 pairs of the regular ones), these pretty bow flats (I tried them on in person and found them to run at least half a size large), and these waterproof heels. Personally I bought a lipstick and eyeliner set, which contains one of my favorite eyeliners and a bonus lipstick for the same price as it would normally cost to just buy the eyeliner. I also reordered one of my favorite workout tank tops in white. I wear my red one all the time, and it'd be nice to rotate them.

If you're all shopped out, I have a few book recommendations. When the weather gets too hot, I feel lazy, so I've been spending a lot of time indoors reading my Kindle. The books I enjoyed most recently are:

• The Outsider by Stephen King - I'm a huge Stephen King fan, even though I don't normally like horror as a genre. He's the master of suspense, and this was no exception. I found the first half of the book to be very thought-provoking with its social commentary on our criminal justice system as well as trials in the court of public opinion, similar to during the #metoo movement. The second half is standard Stephen King sci-fi/horror with more sci-fi than horror. Definitely worth a read.
• Ready Player One - I really enjoyed this young adult sci-fi/fantasy! Apparently it got made into a movie recently, which I didn't realize until after I finished the book. Anyway, the characters are a little flat, but the plot is very entertaining and fast-paced enough to make this a quick read. As a nerd, I enjoyed all the references to classic sci-fi/fantasy media as well as 80's pop culture. I guess I'm getting old enough that some of the things I liked as a kid are now retro!
• Crazy Rich Asians - I actually read this book a while ago but have to mention it here, because the movie is coming out on August 15. I'm already planning to go see it in theaters, because it's really one of the first Hollywood movies with a predominantly Asian cast. Anyway, the book is super fun and lighthearted with lots of glamour, fashion, and drama. Definitely a guilty pleasure summer read.

Sale Alert: Amazon Prime Day Deals (Shoes)

As I mentioned in my last post, I am super excited about Amazon Prime Day, which ends tomorrow July 18 at 3:00am Eastern Time. If you haven't already, check out the best non-fashion deals I found. You do have to be an Amazon Prime member to shop this sale, but you could always sign up for a free 30-day trial (or if you're a student, a free 6-month trial) and cancel it later. Anyway I was browsing through the fashion section and found some shoe deals that were too good not to share. For all of these deals, you can take an additional 30% off the listed price at checkout. By the way, since Amazon uses dynamic pricing, the exact price varies by color, size, and availability. So I can't predict exactly how much something might cost for everyone, and prices may change quickly, but I'll provide them for my own shoe size including the 30% discount. For reference, I usually wear size 6, and my feet are normal to slightly wide.

1. Cole Haan Tali Bow Ballet Flat - Originally $170. Black in size 6.5 is only $65.20 (all prices are after the additional 30% off)! I own these and wear them all the time. They're pretty comfortable for flats and look a little bit like the Ferragamo Varina. I went half a size up, because I don't like when the elastic sides are too tight. By the way, this is the best price I have ever seen for this shoe. For reference, I paid about $90 last year. I ordered a replacement pair for myself.

2. Cole Haan Juliana 75mm Dress Pump - Originally $148. Save an additional 30% off, possibly more depending on your size. I don't wear heels myself, but I know that the Juliana is a very classic well-reviewed dress pump, so if you're looking for a sleek comfortable heel, this is the one for you.

My next picks are all from Frye. While I don't own any pairs of shoes from them myself, I have heard great things about their boots (in terms of quality and leather), and these prices are certainly very tempting! I'm definitely thinking about picking up a pair for myself.

Sale Alert: Amazon Prime Day Deals

It seems like everyone is paying a lot of attention to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but personally I'm much more excited about Amazon Prime Day (really 1.5 days), which starts on July 16 at 3:00pm Eastern Time and ends July 18 at 3:00pm Eastern Time. I shop a lot at Amazon for stuff ranging from electronics to home goods to books to clothes. The best thing about Amazon is the awesome selection and the competitive pricing. The worst thing is that you can easily get overwhelmed/lost if you try to browse their website. Today I wanted to point out some of the best deals I found for Prime Day, mostly on stuff that I own/use/want myself. (By the way, this is not a sponsored post or anything. I just really like Amazon and buy stuff from there all the time.)

If you're not an Amazon Prime member already, I really recommend signing up. I actually use my membership all the time and feel that it's worth the annual price of $119 (it's even cheaper if you're a student and you can get a free 6-month trial). For that price, you get free 2-day shipping (sometimes free same-day), access to TV shows and movies with Prime Video, ad-free music with Prime Music, unlimited photo storage with Prime Photos, and special deals at Whole Foods (Amazon acquired them recently). Really there are even more benefits, but those are the ones I use the most. Since I don't have Netflix or cable, I watch a decent amount of stuff on Prime Video, including movies, BBC TV shows, and documentaries. Last year I canceled my Pandora subscription, because I started using Prime Music instead. Also, I have all of my pictures backed up on Prime Photos now, and I like shopping at Whole Foods, even though they're on the pricier end. Needless to say, I'm a big Amazon fan.

1. Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader - Normally $139.99. Now $79.99 with special offers, $99.99 without special offers.
I have raved countless times on the blog about how much I LOVE my Kindle Paperwhite e-reader. I use it all the time, and I've been reading a lot more since I bought one. It's super lightweight and small enough to put in most of my crossbody bags. Great for travel obviously or just reading right before bed. This is actually one of the best prices I've seen on one; I bought my Kindle without special offers originally for $119.99.

2. Amazon Kindle Unlimited Subscription - Normally $9.99/month. Now $0.99 for 3 months.
I signed up for this myself. I usually borrow e-books from my local library, but they don't have a huge selection, so I thought it'd be nice to supplement it with this service. Most e-books cost at least $9.99, so if you read even one book a month, it would be worth the monthly cost. Obviously $0.99 for 3 months is a no-brainer.

3. Bose QuietComfort 25 Noise Cancelling Headphones - Normally $299.00. Now $125.00.
I bought myself the Bose QuietComfort 35 a few months ago, and they have been life-changing. I use them all the time (when I'm working, when my boyfriend goes to bed early, when I'm traveling, etc). In general, Bose makes some of the best headphones, and this is an amazing price for a pair!

4. Amazon Music Unlimited Subscription - Normally $7.99/month for Prime members. Now $0.99 for 4 months.
As I mentioned, I used to pay for a Pandora subscription, but in the past year, I switched to Prime Music. Their selection is still a little limited though. With Amazon Music, you can get unlimited ad-free access to any song. Pretty good deal for $0.99.

5. Instant Pot 6 Quart 7-in-1 Multi-Functional Cooker - Normally $99.95. Now $58.99.
I'm sure most of you have heard of the Instant Pot by now. In case you're not familiar with it, it's a combined pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, etc. I mostly use mine for the pressure cooker and slow cooker functions. It is super useful for cooking meat until it's fork-tender and makes great stews/soups. There are a ton of Instant Pot recipes out there, and I find it helpful for making dinners at home.

6. 23andMe Health and Ancestry DNA Test - Normally $199.99. Now $99.99.
I'm super tempted by this deal. I haven't done any genetic tests before, but I'm curious, and I have several friends that did who recommend it. I think it would be really interesting, and this deal allows you to get both the ancestry information AND the health report for the same price as just getting the ancestry information.

If you like Arc'teryx, you can take 30% off one full-price item (the brand rarely goes on sale). By the way, REI is a great place to try activewear from different brands. They have an extremely generous return policy; you can return anything within one year of purchase even if you've used it.

My second favorite outdoor retailer Backcountry is running a sale where you can take an additional 20% off their biggest brands. Also for a limited time only, you can take 20% off one full-price item. I bought a climbing helmet for myself, because safety first. Sale Alert: Kindle Paperwhite and J.Crew Sale Picks

I just wanted to post about a couple notable sales that I came across today.

1) I'm not sure how long this offer is good for, but I see that today the Kindle Paperwhite e-reader is only $79.99 with special offers and $99.99 without special offers for Amazon Prime members. This is the best price I've seen on the e-reader in a while. I own and love the Paperwhite (without special offers, because I hate ads). I use it all the time and even gave my boyfriend one for Christmas this year. Of course it's really handy for traveling, but I also just carry it around in my purse so I can read even when I'm in the checkout line at the grocery store. Ever since I bought one, I've been reading a ton of books (I check out free e-books from my library), and now I spend less time glued to my cellphone/TV (probably for the best). I hope they don't go out of business since their clothes fit me so well, but I have to admit that they've been pretty off-base in terms of their overall design. As you guys know, I'm a big fan of J.Crew Factory. Yes, their quality is kind of hit or miss, but sometimes you can find pieces that are nicer than retail J.Crew.

If you're also a fan of J.Crew Factory, you're in luck, because Gilt City is once again offering coupons for an additional 30% off your online purchase (or 35% off clearance items). All you need to do is sign up (if you haven't already), RSVP for the offer, and you'll get an email with the code. This coupon is only good through next Monday, October 19. Here's what I ordered:
- pocket tunic sweater in black (on clearance, reviewed here), $25.99. I own and like the grey version.
- fair isle sweater (reviewed here), $31.15.
- herringbone blazer, $78.75. I saw this in store, but they didn't have my size. From what I remember, the material and construction seemed comparable to retail J.Crew, but I would like to take a closer look.
- suede Sawyer boots in olive moss, $73.50. I'm excited to get these in the mail, because the silhouette is reminiscent of my beloved Sam Edelman Petty boots, and I'm in love with the olive color.
I don't expect everything to work out, but it's worth a shot for these prices.

I also recommend the long-sleeve boatneck stripe tee (reviewed here), now $20.65. I own both the navy and red versions.

On the guys' side, Engineer W ordered this gorgeous fisherman sweater (currently backordered in a number of sizes) for $34.30 and a few basic tees for $8.05 each.

After-Christmas Sales

I hope everyone had a great holiday! Mine was quiet and relaxing. I didn't travel this year and just stayed at home with Engineer W. It was nice to wake up in our own bed on Christmas morning and open presents. The only blemish on an otherwise good Christmas was that I had pulled a muscle in my neck earlier this week (quite painful and inconvenient), and I'm still recovering from it. The timing is unfortunate since we were planning to take a road trip to visit extended family after Christmas. Now that trip is delayed until spring, and I can't even check out the after-Christmas sales in person today! The end of Christmas usually marks the beginning of the winter clearance sale season, so if you're not all shopped out, it can be a great time to score some deals. Lots of stores have launched new sales today. Even though I'm not up to braving the mall, I can still scope out the online deals. Here are a few of my favorite sales.

Rebecca Minkoff Love Crossbody (Taupe, Black)

I've been lusting after this quilted crossbody bag for months now. It's reminiscent of my dream designer bag, the Chanel boy, which I'll probably never be able to afford. This less expensive version has been included in several Friends and Family sales for 25-30% off MSRP, but usually only the nonstandard colors were available. This time Amazon has the black one with gold hardware, which is on my personal wishlist (Santa, are you listening?). I've never shopped at Brooks Brothers before, but I'm very interested in their Red Fleece Collection, which is targeted at a younger crowd and according to their website features a slimmer updated fit. The pieces in this line are very classic Americana, which some may find a little too boring but others will see as wardrobe staples. I've checked their website sporadically throughout the year, and they don't seem to have too many sales. Also usually shipping costs around $8. At full price, their pieces costs about the same as J.Crew. However, their button-downs seem to be more tailored with darts in the back. Could be a good alternative if you're looking for fitted shirts instead of the oversized boxy ones that J.Crew's been rolling out this season.

Happy Friday, everyone! The weekend couldn't have come fast enough. Earlier this week I had an existential crisis about my research direction, because it turns out that the main contribution we proposed to do had already been done by another research group last year. I was feeling pretty discouraged, like I'm perpetually behind and can never catch up. Since then, I've come to see the bright side of things. For example, I would rather find out now than after I've finished all of my experiments and tried to publish the results. Also, if there are other groups working in this space, that means I'm on the right track since other people care about solving the same problem.

Now onto a more frivolous topic, weekend sales! There are some really good ones going on this weekend. Here are two of my favorites.

J.CREW
25% off fall favorites plus 30% off fall sale styles with code GETWARM through 11/11/2014. Note: final sale is off the table for now. Some JCAs said that you can get 40% off in-store, which is a better deal of course when stacked with already lower in-store prices, but final sale is in effect. Personally I would rather buy online with no final sale. To me it's worth paying a little extra to be able to try things out at home and think them over. If you know exactly what you want to get, then in-store is your best bet (assuming they actually have it in stock).

Sale Picks
Sateen toothpick pant - Complete misnomer; the fabric's not sateen at all. It's a nice sturdy lightly-sueded material. A little stiff at first but softens with wear. I got the dark fatigue color in size 26. I also tried on the 25, but it was too tight in the waist. I like these pants so much that I also ordered the snow and the black. Great price at only $35 a pair!
Toothpick in miller wash - Great reviews. Only larger sizes left.
Silk sleeveless blouse - I haven't tried this on in person, but I like the classic style. I ordered the ivory and the rose in 00P based on the reviews.
Silk sleeveless dress - What a steal at $21! Looks like something from Madewell. Ordered the warm iris in XSP to try.

NORDSTROM
Clearance sale. Save up to 40% online and in stores through 11/11/2014. I guess Nordstrom is scrapping their half-yearly sale? That's fine, because these prices are pretty good. Lots of shoes on sale. I've been looking for more sneakers, so I picked up these in wild honey.
